The Prime Minister of Australia, Julia Gillard announced that the federal government will give $2000 to anyone who trade in their old car that is manufactured before 1995. This policy will be started from January next year. This policy is implemented because Australians own a lot of old motor cars which guzzle a lot of petrol and spew out lots of pollution. Ms Gillard also stated that the old cars collected would be turned into scrap metal. Moreover, this offer is only for 200,000 new vehicles and it will cost government $394 million. By the way, Ms Gillard also declared that government wants to set up “citizens’ assembly” to curb the difficult issue of a carbon price.
This is a good policy as it can reduce the numbers of old car in the country. The old cars are always consume more petrol and spew out more unhealthy gases. Besides that, the old cars will also harm the users of roads because most of them are not maintained well. By doing this project, it help to reduce the the pollution as well as increase the safety of road's users.
ReplyDeleteAs what has happened in Malaysia, there were many people traded in their old car when the government offered RM5000 for each car. Therefore, i think that this project can be carried out successfully as the rebate is attractive.
I do agree that this policy can help to reduce the accident rate in the country as well as decrease the emission of harmful gases into the atmosphere.
ReplyDeleteHowever, is it effective?
What I mean is that air pollution is not caused by emission of harmful gases from the old vehicles alone. There are still lots of reasons. This policy may redress very slightly the problem, but it is causing the government A$ 394 million! How about the opportunity cost behind this amount?
