A thousand broken hearts: tragedy of teen campers

The deaths of two teenagers run over by a ute as they camped out after a party had "broke 1000 hearts", says one of their grief-stricken mothers.

Early on Tuesday morning, 19-year-olds Will Dalton-Brown and Eliza Wannan were sleeping beside a ute on a farm near Molong, in central west NSW, after celebrating Australia Day at a gathering of friends.

Police allege a 17-year-old boy reversed over them in his ute as he prepared to leave the Belgravia Road property about 5am.

The injured pair, whose long-time friendship had recently taken a romantic turn, was rushed to hospital, where they died within hours of each other on Wednesday.

Lee Dalton said her son was on the "cusp of life" but now her worst nightmare has been realised.

"The deaths of Will and Eliza broke 1000 hearts on Wednesday - four of them being their parents," she told AAP.

"It's every parent's worst nightmare. For us it has become a reality.

"Will was, and will remain, 19 years and two days old."

Ms Dalton said her son had recently returned to Australia after a gap year in which he spent three months travelling around southern African by himself.

He financed his trip by chopping and selling firewood.

He and Eliza, former students of Orange's Kinross Wolaroi School, were both about to start university courses.

Nedra Burns, a friend of the Wannan family, said Eliza's parents were "absolutely devastated".

Eliza's MySpace page said she was "supposed to be born in the 60s" and loved to laugh at her own jokes and find the good in everyone.

Police took statements from everyone in the area at the time of the tragedy.

The 17-year-old driver was questioned and released pending further inquiries.

  1. oh ya! australian news! I had almost forgot!...

Tragedy happens everyday; this is something that we can't control by ourselves. Many cases like this could be found in daily newspapers. We take no control of it and we are unable to change anything. Death is one of the processes in life, nobody is going to escape from it!

    So,.....

We should just accept rather than letting our lives to filled with sadness and disappointment. Life is to be enjoy, not suffer! Let the ready-to-go to go....

To be able to let go is hard; I know that. But we have to stand out from the past. Dont put ourselves always in hopeless condition because it makes us suffer more. Well, to be able to let go is part of the learning process in life. Hope that the broken 1000 hearts especially the parents of the victims will recover soon.

So so so many tragedies happened, making this world no longer a safe and lovely place. It is sad, but we as human beings can change it to make this world a better place to live in, by helping each other with true and sincere heart. Word is powerful. It hurts people easily, but it can make a person happy for a whole day too. Words like "thank you" or "I appreciate your helping hand so much" can make a great difference in life. So, speak it out more frequently because it is one way to help others too. It is just an easy step.

    Don't you think like that?^^

  2. Totally agree, Fei Wen...

Making the life happy and enjoyable is the most important. Anything will be happened suddenly and unconscious. Just appreciate what we have now. Don't expect more than that. Perhaps we are no longer in this world in the next second.

  3. ya...

Word is powerful. Even a word like 'A***H' has led to an aggressive actions as what was happened in Malaysia recently. Church were threw by others with gasoline bomb, followed by the mosques were threw with the head of pig and now temple was disturbed by other in Johor. That's all what caused by a single word 'A***H'.

Imagine that anything will just happened after you speak out a single word. Speech is very dangerous. So, be careful when you are talking(^.^).
